NME Magazine advertising

The New Musical Express is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom that has been published since March 1952. It magazine advertising is an example that I can use when designing the magazine for my music video. This will help give me ideas on how to advertise my magazine and make it look attractive to people.

Digipak

A digipak is a compat disc or DVD packaging and is a registered trademark of AGI Media, a MeadWestvaco, Inc. resource, which acquired the original trademark holder, IMPAC Group, Inc., in 2000. A Digipak consits of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak[1] is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot"[2] rather than a full plastic tray.

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak)[3] is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets.

Instead of creating a website we will be creating a digipak instead to promoto the band and the song

Suture

This is a clssic Hollywood narrative and editing "sutures" or positions the audience in certain ways making only one prefferred reading possible, however unconcious the audience is of that position. A good example of this is the film crash when the girl runs out to stop his dad from being shot because she believes she can protect him because she has an invisible coat that her dad said will protect her. It is very easy to get drawn into this particular scene. I wasnt able to find a video on YouTube that let me embedd it so i have the URL link here:

Reception Theory

Given that the effects model and the Uses and Gratifications Model have their problems and limitations a different approach to audiences was developed by the academic Stuart Hall at Birmingham University in the 1970s. This considers how texts were encorded with meaning by producers and then decoded by audiences.

The theory suggests that:
When a producer constructs a text it is encoded with a meaning or message that the producer wishes to convey the audiences. In some instances audiences will correctly decode the message or meaning and understand what the produceer was trying to say. In some instances the audience will either reject or fail to correctly understand the message.

Stuart Hall identified three types of audience readings of the text:
1.Dominant
2.Negotiated
3.Oppositional

Dominant is where the audience decodes the message as the producer wants them to do and broadly agrees with it e.g. watching a political speech and agreeing with it.

Negoiated is where the audience accepts, rejects or refines elements of the text in light of previously held views. For Example neither agreeing or diagreeing with the political speech or being distracting.

Oppositional is where the dominant meaning is recognised but rejected for cultral political or ideological reasons. E.g. total rejection of the political speech and active propersition.

The Uses and Gratifications Model

It is still unclear that there is any link between the consumption of voilent media texts and voilent imitative behaviour. It is also clear the theory is flawed in that many people do watch voilent texts and appear not to be influenced.

Therefore there is a new theory is needed called the use and gratifactions model. It is opposite of the Effects Model the audience. The audience are now active rather than passive. The audience uses text and not used by it. The audiece uses the text for its own gratification or pleasure. Here the power lies with the audience and not the producers. This theory emphasises what audiences do with media texts, how and why they use them.

Far from being duped by the media, the audience is free to reject, use or play with the media meanings as they see fit. Audiences therefore use media texts to gratify needs for:
Diversion
Esapism
Information
Pleasure
Comparing relationships and lifestyles with one's own.
Sexual Stimulation

Helps people with issues such as
Learning
Emotional Satisfaction
Relaxation
Help with issues of personal identity
Help with issues of social identity

Controversially the theory suggests the consumption of violent images can be helpful rather than harfmul. The theory suggests that audiences act out their violent impulses through the consumption of media violence. The audience's inclination towards voilence is therefore sublimated, and they are less likely to commit violent acts.

Actors and Actresses

I am pleased to say that i do have people that will be able to film in my music video and will only need about three people in the music video. I myself may appear in the music video and have a cameo for a particular scene in the video that effects what happens to the couple. It is likely that i will only be able to do filming on the weekends as the people that i have to film in the music video are not with Robert Clack School.
